Baby Bonnet

I don't usually like knitting baby clothes, sure I like the fact that the time taken to produce such small items is very short but I am definately not a white bootees, layette kind of person. Even my own children had to rely on their Grandmothers knitting as I had really bad carpel tunnel while pregnant and couldn't knit even if I wanted to. Anyway baby knitting has never been high on my to do list, that was until I found THIS I just had to make it, plus I needed a slight diversion from sock knitting, for a day at least.

I used Cleckheaton machine washable pure wool as I am sure any new mum would not have time for handwashing and as it used less than one ball for the main part and a tiny amount for the contrast I have enough left over to make another in the reverse colour way. The colour is much deeper than in this photo, a deep burgundy trimmed with a lighter burgundy, see I told you I am not a traditional baby knitter. I would have loved to knit it using the colours used in the pattern but for some reason no one seems to produce a chocolate brown, not even Bendigo who have almost every colour of the rainbow. So if someone knows of a machine washable chocolate brown wool let me know. This particular one is going to be a gift for a young couple in our church who have just had their first baby, I hope they like it as much as I enjoyed knitting it.

I will definately be making this one again, but for now back to socks.

I've been eyeing off that bonnet on whip up for a while. What is the gauge,I know for sure you can get the chocolate brown in checkheaton country 12ply(use it for the base of my cupcake hat). If you can't find it let me know I'd be happy to check my local spotlight and send you down a ball. I'm thinking baby pink or blue with a chocolate edging..

The bonnet is gorgeous!!! I think some baby colours are far too wishy-washy!! Roll on more bright colours. The 2 shades look wonderful together and I think you are right about the machine washing too.

What ply is the chocolate brown that you need?

I have some Bluebell (5 ply) in chocolate brown if that is of any use.

That is a looooooooooooovely bonnet and the pattern's nice too.

Very cute. I didn't like baby colours on my babies either, nor did I knit for them. Purl had a couple of jumpers when she was little, but the other two . . . nope!

Sharon that bonnett is awesome. I'm not normally one for frilly baby stuff, or baby stuff at all for that matter.

But that is awesome! In the right colours it could be very gothic.

That is so cute and looks so much nicer than those washed out pastels.

Hey Sharon,
Have returned to blogging again. I love your baby bonnet, feather and fan I think.
I bought several Harmony knit stich books from Crochet Australia. (LInk on my blog) They were the cheapest, and have a huge range of knitting books.

That is such a sweet baby hat. I love the vintage baby books that come from the 60's. Lol.. not really too vintage.
