Not Just Any Old Scarf

My 6 year old nephew came up to me last week and asked me if I could knit him a scarf. He told me the three colours he wanted in it and I am sure he was probably expecting a typical tri-colour striped scarf but of course I wanted to come up with something a little different. I decided to knit it sideways and instead of adding a normal fringe I chose i-cords instead which added a little something extra to the plain garter stitch. What do you think?

Now Janelle has put an order in for one but hers is to be much longer and in brown and blue tones to match her favourite pair of shoes, oh joy! No seriously I love it when my children ask me to make something for them as these days they like the store bought things and mums creations aren't as cool anymore.

Hopefully I can get it made before my new yarn from Bendigo Woollen Mills turns up for my new project. You may remember that I made this a couple of winters back in a green shade. Well I love it so much that I am going to make it in redcurrant from Bendy, a rustic red colour. I really am in awe of Joan McGowan-Michael and her designs, there is a great article in the latest Interweave Knits about her. Oh well I am off now to cast on for Janelles scarf, till next time happy knitting.

Looking forward to seeing the new cardigan when it comes out! JMM does some truly beautiful designs and seems to relaise people aren't just straight up and down!

I love the idea of a longways scarf and the Icord looks great. Don't wish too hard for what you want: I see a bazillion scarves in your future!!! Do you think I could remember RedCurrant?? I was sure you were knitting it in a fruity colour, but which one???!!!

I love the scarf, and it is very masculine looking. I'm sure your nephew will love it. Great color choices too!

I like it A LOT especially the I cord fringe. I like the look of a longways scarf, I would think they would hold their shape a little better too.

I'm with you when it comes to Joan MM, she rocks! I've not yet knit any of her designs (knitting for others) but I LOVE the one you have knit and can't wait to see the next.
you are so sweet to knit for the kiddies, isn't it so special for them to ask?! love the icord fringe, too...I use it often, it's a pain, but worth it!

love the scarf. I have thought about doing a length ways one before. I have a pattern in a male patterns book that is done length ways.

My girls love my knitting and love me knitting for them. I hope they never grow out of it.

The scarf looks great & the i-cord is an excellent idea - I love knitting scarf lengthwise esp for strips. Oh, the vintage cardi is gorgeous & can't wait to see it knitted up.

It's a tasty looking scarf, and I'm sure he will love it for the unique coolness. Gosh that IS a lot of stitches to get on needles.
